The Plate Calculator turns a target weight into the exact plates to load per side. You configure your bar weight and plate sizes once in Settings; while logging, it's a toggle you turn on for a set rather than something that appears on its own.

Where to find it

Settings → Plate Calculator to configure your bar and plates. While logging a set, the toggle lives in the header of Kenso's number pad: it's the dumbbell icon, shown while you're entering a barbell exercise's weight.

Setting up your plates

In the editor, set your bar weight and toggle which plate sizes you have access to. Kenso includes a default set of plates for your weight unit and lets you add others. Save applies the change everywhere the calculator is shown.

Using it while logging

The dumbbell toggle only appears when all of the following are true: the exercise is a barbell exercise, you're on the weight field (not reps), and Kenso's custom number pad is the one on screen. Tap it to show the plate strip above the keypad; tap it again to hide it. A few states you might see:

  • Enter a weight to see plates: no weight entered yet.
  • Below bar: the target is lighter than your configured bar; the message includes your bar weight in your unit, e.g. "Below bar (45 lb)".
  • bar only: the target is exactly your bar weight, no plates needed.
  • If the exact target can't be loaded with your available plates, the strip shows the nearest loadable weight and how much is left over; tapping it fills that weight in for you.

Good to know

  • Plate configuration is stored separately for pounds and kilograms, so switching units in Settings doesn't lose your other unit's setup.
  • The toggle only shows for barbell exercises: dumbbell, machine, and bodyweight exercises don't get a plate breakdown.
  • If you've turned off Kenso's custom number pad, you won't see the toggle. See Turning the logger keyboard off.
  • The calculator reflects whatever plates you've told it you have, so if it's suggesting plates you don't own, update your setup in Settings.
